Our core skills

Our particular areas of expertise are:

Policy analysis and development

Understanding the policy problems and issues and providing realistic deliverable solutions.

Example: The National Continuing Professional Development ( CPD ) Strategy: CUREE has acted as expert champion for a Talk2Learn based on-line consultation about the next phase of development of the National CPD Strategy. CUREE is currently leading the development of a national framework for mentoring and coaching for the next phase of the National CPD Strategy.

The application of technology to learning

A deep understanding of the power and limitations of information and communications technology and the ways in which it can be harnessed to make research accessible and useful.

Example: The Research Informed Practice Site (TRIPs) CUREE is responsible for the creation, management and maintenance of a new area of the DfES Standards web site to make available innovative, practitioner friendly, non-linear digests of recent articles from research journals. We focus particularly on topics of interest to teachers and other 'practitioners' and users in education. Our aim is to build clusters of related articles to enable users to explore practical concerns from a range of perspectives and in different contexts. CUREE tracks down the research, appraises it and presents it in an accessible user-orientated web based format.

Establishing the key structures and relationships in complex data and presenting them in forms the client can use. The EPPI Centre logo

Example: The EPPI Centre Systematic Reviews CUREE leads the registered National Review Group on Continuing Professional Development which is co-sponsored by the GTC, the DfES and the NUT. Our reviews have been widely used in policy circles as evidence of effective practice in CPD .

Connection and integration

Drawing on our wide knowledge of the education world we can make synergistic linkages between related policies and developments.Creative Partnership Logo

Example: Creative Learning Action Research Partnerships. CUREE's experience of devising and running research partnerships for the Teacher Training Agency and advising on the Best Practice Research Scholarships has informed the development of a proposal for an ambitious research programme for Creative Partnerships. The proposal is based on current best evidence of models of peer support and links directly to the DfES capacity building programme in CPD .

Application of research

Our research analysts and information scientists can find, analyse and make useable a wide body of research material to improve policy development and professional practice.

Example: The NERF Evidence Bulletin. CUREE has developed and produced a pioneering evidence bulletin for the National Education Research Forum (NERF). This has involved sourcing, testing, appraising and digesting research from a range of areas across the educational spectrum and presenting the findings in ways which will enable practitioners to engage with the evidence.
