SKEIN: Professional Learning is an expert, evaluation based school improvement service that:

  • Provides evidence about how effectively your school or college connects staff learning to pupil/student learning with next steps in building an effective and efficient professional learning environment.
  • Helps you to meet the Department for Education's standard for teachers' professional development and prepare for OFSTED inspections.
  • Enables you to build CPD capacity in school as a means of driving forwards on pupil/student progression.

At CUREE we believe the principle drivers of quality in teaching and learning are the knowledge, skills and practices of the teacher and trainer. All ways of improving teaching and learniing include the professional development and learning of serving teachers, trainers and those that lead them. Through multi-layered analysis of evidence CUREE have identified the key aspects of professional development which can actively improve learner outcomes, and it is from this base that the SKEIN assessment criteria has been derived so at to assess most accurately an organisation’s CPDL offering.

The Service

The SKEIN service is designed to be as easy and unobtrusive as possible; making use of your existing paperwork and interviews with staff and leadership teams in brief, twilight or lunchtime sessions. CUREE will then produce a practical and detailed report identifying the core strengths to build upon as well as effective and efficient ways for your institution to move forward. This can then accompanied by a follow-up visit after two-and-a-half terms to track progress and evaluate impact.

The term skein refers to a flock of geese flying in tandem, an image that reflects the core values of the service; rapid progress through shared leadership, development and mutual support and representing both collective effort and individual endeavour.  It can also refer to a piece of wool wound so as not to be tangled - much as we like to think we help you ‘untangle’ your CPDL!
