Effectively Teaching Infants Mental Arithmetic

Aim: To examine the problems children encounter in arithmetic and to decide whether a programme of activities using visual images developed by Catherine Stern in the 1940s could be used by teachers to improve pupils' mental arithmetic.

Aim: To improve standards and achieve greater curriculum coherence in mathematics, science and related subjects by exploiting the opportunities that exist for collaborative approaches to teaching and learning using low cost, portable and easily accessible technology.

Aims of the Project: To develop a PD tool that focuses on using interactive whiteboard technology effectively to enhance mathematics teaching To inform and extend previous research into the effective use of interactive technologies in Mathematics classrooms Two key questions focused the discussion and research during the project: What makes an effective resource that stimulates learning when using an interactive whiteboard? How can teachers develop their skills so they can create/use resources of this nature?"

Aim: To identify which teaching methods are more effective in promoting good understanding of number concepts and skills for pupils to make significant progress in number at Key Stage 2.

Sustaining teacher researchers: what support really makes a difference?

Aim: The main aim of the project was to explore how to establish practitioner research as an effective and sustainable form of continuing professional development both for participating researchers and, through their research work, for colleagues within the schools and network.
